Introduction

From a small town in Bagru, Jaipur, to the national podium and now to the world stage in Shanghai.
Shubham Kumawat’s journey is the kind that makes you believe in the power of showing up, working hard, and trusting the process.
Shubham graduated from Bhartiya Skill Development University (BSDU) in 2025 with a B.Voc. degree in IT & Networking Skills. Over three years of embedded workplace learning, three internships, and an entire competition season supported by BSDU, he earned not one but two Gold Medals, at the Regional and National levels of the IndiaSkills Competition.
He now represents India in ICT Network Infrastructure at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.
What makes this story distinctive is the model behind it. Unlike programs where competition preparation happens on the side, BSDU builds it directly into the curriculum.
Shubham’s State, Regional and National-level IndiaSkills preparation all took place on campus, guided step by step by mentors who work alongside students rather than simply teaching from the front. It reflects a conviction at the core of BSDU’s approach.
That graduate competencies are learned best through hands-on practice, real internships and close mentorship, not lectures alone.
We spoke with Shubham twice:
- once in a written Q&A that digs little deeper
- once in a video interview right after his win
Here is his story, in his own words.
Interview with Shubham
You just won a medal at the IndiaSkills National Competition. What was going through your mind when your name was called?
“When my name was called, I felt proud, emotional and grateful. It was a moment that proved all the hard work, practice and dedication were worth it.”
A lot of young people still ask whether practice-based education like BSDU is “worth it.” What would you tell them, based on your own experience?
“I would tell young people that a skills-based university like Bhartiya Skill Development University gives real practical exposure, industry-focused learning and confidence to compete at national and international levels.”
How did your BSDU experience prepare you for the competition – and was there anything that surprised you about how the university works?
“The training at BSDU prepared me with hands-on practice, discipline and industry standard skills. I was surprised by how much focus the university gives to practical learning instead of only theory.”
Beyond your technical competencies, what did the preparation process teach you that you think will matter most in your career?
“The preparation process taught me patience, time management, teamwork, confidence and how to perform under pressure – skills that will help throughout my career.”
If you could go back and speak to yourself two or three years ago, just before starting at BSDU, what’s the one thing you would say?
“I would tell my younger self: ‘Believe in yourself, keep learning and never underestimate the power of skills and consistency.'”
Shubham, could you please introduce yourself and share your journey of winning IndiaSkills at the National level?
“My name is Shubham. I belong to Bagru, Jaipur, Rajasthan. I graduated from BSDU in 2025 with a B.Voc. degree in IT & Networking Skills.
My journey began in 2022, when I joined BSDU. During my three years at BSDU, I learned a great deal. I also completed three internships during this period, which gave me valuable practical knowledge.
BSDU played a key role in guiding and supporting my journey through the IndiaSkills Competition. With the institution’s continuous mentorship and encouragement, I progressed from the State Competition to the Regional Competition, where I won the Gold Medal. I then advanced to the National Level Competition and again secured the Gold Medal. BSDU supported me throughout this entire journey and contributed significantly to my success.
How do you compare your feelings at the start of your competition journey to how you feel now, after winning at the National level?
“It feels great to see that I have enriched my overall experience through this journey. When I started, I had very limited practical experience – but now I have grown my professional experience significantly.
I am currently undergoing advanced training in Mumbai as part of my international preparation. I have successfully qualified to compete at the international level. My next competition will be held in China.”
When your name was announced as the national winner and you found out you would represent India at WorldSkills, how did you feel?
“It was an incredible feeling. I was extremely happy when my name was announced.”
Did you expect that your name would be announced?
“Yes, it was expected. I had worked hard and had received tremendous support and encouragement from my mentors and everyone around me.”
Your parents were present at the announcement. How did they react to your achievement?
Shubham’s mother: “I feel extremely good and happy. It was wonderful to see our son progressing and achieving such important milestones.”
Shubham’s father: “I am also feeling extremely delighted.” – Interview End.
